Ottawa Kansas originally founded as an Indian mission and was incorporated as a city on Nov. 23, 1867.  Ottawa still serves as the Franklin County seat.  Franklin County's development was highly influenced by the Indian tribes native to this area as well as those brought here by government treaties.
Most of the Victorian-era mansions and buildings in Ottawa were designed by renowned architect George Washburn. This fascinating Victorian city is only 20
miles south of Lawrence at the crossroads of Interstate 35 and Kansas 59. Kansas City is about 50 miles
to the northeast.

Industry, agribusiness and manufacturing were a significant factor in Ottawa and Franklin County's economic prosperity in the early days, as it still is today.  Local ranches raise bison and miniature horses with tours and exhibitions available.  But, all in all, agriculture is by far the largest business in
Franklin County.
