The Dietrich cabin, built in 1859, offers a glimpse
of the early years of Kansas history. It stands today
in the Ottawa City Park as a tribute to the courageous couple who suffered severe hardships on the
Kansas frontier.
  
The Old Depot Museum is a two-story passenger depot built in 1888 and serving today as a museum. Museum exhibits include a model railroad, displays about John Brown, Silkville, a Victorian parlor, general store and much more. 
     
The Arts Council is located in the Carnegie Library building. The Center is also home to the Ottawa Suzuki Strings. At the Ottawa Municipal Auditorium you can see a variety of musical performances throughout the year. This local venue has hosted some of the biggest including BR-549, Johnny Cash, Ty Herndon and Joe Diffee. Also from Wellsville is Chely Wright. The country music star, who has topped the charts and won the hearts of millions of fans, grew up in this town of 1,600 in the northeast corner of Franklin County.  

   
Art lovers can enjoy the works of Elizabeth "Grandma" Layton at the Wellsville Library. Layton was born in Wellsville. She battled with depression all of her life but overcame her problems through her art. The Ottawa Community Arts Council also offers monthly exhibits featuring local and regional artists. The Arts Council provides special classes for children and adults and sells original art works and painting.
   
From Ottawa to Welda, the Prairie Spirit Trail runs more than 33 miles. Kansas' first rail-trail meanders through golden prairies, quiet woodlands and beautiful lakeside scenery. The Prairie Spirit Trail and The Flint Hills Nature Trail will intersect in Ottawa. They will offer hiking, bicycling and equestrian opportunities.
   
The Midland Railway Historical Association provides
the ticket to a wonderful trip to the past. The group operates an excursion train, which departs from a depot constructed in 1906 in Baldwin about 15 miles
northeast of Ottawa.
  
The Midland Railway
operates on a line originally constructed in 1867 for the Leavenworth, Lawrence and Gulf Railway and later taken over by the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe. The annual Maple Leaf Festival and the Haunted Halloween Train have become popular attractions.

The Franklin County Courthouse is regarded as one of the most outstanding works of George P. Washburn who was one of the best known 19th century architects. The courtroom and exterior of the building was used in the NBC television movie "Cross of Fire" filmed in the summer of 1989.
